Object Description
A black and white photograph of a group of people standing in a rural area. The men are wearing slacks and white shirts. The man on the left has a white hat in his right hand. The man on the right is wearing a similar hat on his head. The older man in the back is wearing a sports coat. The women are all wearing mid-calf-length dresses. The little boy in front is wearing shorts and a white shirt and holding a hat in front of him. They are standing on dry dirt strewn with rocks and some short, scrubby grass. Behind them is a mountain covered with bushes. There is text in Greek on the back of the photograph. Some of it is illegible, but the date is given as "15th August 1949" and the name "Koula Kouneli" is also present.
Origin
Photographs donated by Mae Counelis from her mother, Koula Lazou Counelis' estate.

Mae H. Counelis, of Berwyn, IL, was born on Feb. 10, 1931, to the late Koula and Anthony Counelis. She was raised in Chicago Heights, IL, and graduated from Bloom High School. Mae received a bachelor of science degree from George Washington University, Washington, DC. She worked in the research department of the U of I, Chicago. Later, she worked in cancer research at Schering Corp. in NJ where she developed a patent for helping to cure cervical cancer.
Based on the text, this picture was taken in August 1949, and one of the women in the picture is likely Koula Counelis.
