Object Description
A black and white photo of an old woman and three children. The photo is taken outside. The woman is sitting in a chair with the three children standing around her. They are placed in front of a striped tapestry, which is hung up behind them. The old woman is wearing a light-colored tiered skirt with a black top and a handkerchief on her head. The litter girl on her right is wearing a polka dot dress, a bow in her hair, and black boots. The boy to the left of the woman is wearing a light-colored shirt and pants. The little boy in front of him is dressed in white shorts and a white shirt and is facing away from the camera.

Mae H. Counelis, of Berwyn, IL, was born on Feb. 10, 1931, to the late Koula and Anthony Counelis. She was raised in Chicago Heights, IL, and graduated from Bloom High School. Mae received a bachelor of science degree from George Washington University, Washington, DC. She worked in the research department of the U of I, Chicago. Later, she worked in cancer research at Schering Corp. in NJ where she developed a patent for helping to cure cervical cancer.
