Object Description
Framed portrait of a female dressed in traditional costume of a black head scarf with gold embroidery and gold coin attachments, white dress with blue and red embroidery. She wears also wears an elaborately decorated red, blue, and black vest and a red apron with gold embroidery. There is a black skirt that hangs out from the bottom of the white dress. She wears white stockings and black shoes with red white and blue details. The background is an exterior scene with green in the foreground, a domed church in the back ground, and topped with a blue sky. The bottom right hand corner of the print says "Thessalia" in English and Greek. The matting for the portrait is a white in a gold painted frame. There is also a thin green lining on the frame.
Origin
Donated by George T Anton. This print comes from the book "Hellenic National Costumes" by Hadzimichali, Angeliki and Nicolas Sperling. The prints were done by miniature artist Sperling. The book had multiple pressings (1948, 1954). Ultimately there were two volumes and a supplement with 111 plates total. The original unframed, unmatted prints were 8 1/2" X 11 5/8".
