Ice cream was thought to be invented in the Persian Empire around 450 BC. Ice was kept in cold storage until summer called yakhchal and then flavored. Through the centuries the recipe has evolved from culture to culture. It is commonly eaten as a dessert, and the ornate serving dishes may have been used when it was served on special occasions.
