Object Description
Wooden trophy with base, figure, and wooden backing. The base is square with the front and sides angled inwards towards the top. On the front side is a trapezoidal metal plaque with "Sam Sotos N.H.I.B.T. 1962 All Tourney" engraved upon it. On the top of the base is a metal male figure standing with feet together on a metal base. The figure is wearing a loin cloth and a small cape. His arms are stretched outwards and upwards while holding a torch. His head is angled upwards as if looking at the torch. The male figure and the metal base are both gold-plated. The wooden backing is attached to the base by a metal cylinder. The wooden part is a vertically elongated elipse with a pointed end at the top and a flattened end at the bottom. The bottom of the trophy has two holes housing the bolts that hold on the metal figure and the wooden backing. The bottom of the base also has a silver sticker with red lettering reading: "NOBLE Trophies for Champions, Made in the U.S.A." There is also what appears to be a price sticker.
Origin
Found in collection. Sam Sotos played for the Ypsilanti Sons of Pericles in the N.H.I.B.T. In 1931 Sam was given MVP honors when Ypsilanti Sons of Pericles won the N.H.I.B.T. Ypsilanti Sons of Pericles won the N.H.I.B.T. again in 1962 when Sotos was named to the All Tournament Team. Sotos is a member of the N.H.I.B.T. Hall of Fame. The Ypsilanti Sons of Pericles were the dominant team in N.H.I.B.T. history winning the tournament 24 times between 1932 and 2006. The N.H.I.B.T. was founded in 1931 as an outlet for Greek youth to have fun and escape the rigors of the Depression, to network with fellow Greeks, and to test thier basketball skills in the early years of the sport as part of assimilation to American culture. Trophies for Champions was a registered trademark of F. H. Noble & Co of Chicago. The company specialized in statuettes, figurines, plaques, ornamental cups, and medals.
