The farm was owned by Vasili and Agora Yankopoulos. She spun and dyed the wool from their sheep and wove the blanket.
Heavy blanket/rugs such as this called flokati, were taken into the mountains by the men and boys when they took their flocks out to graze for days at a time. It was the equivilant of a sleeping bag today. , heavy enough to keep you warm and dry during the cold mountain nights.
THis one was given to one of their sons and his wife, Pascal and Lambriny. Lambriny brought it to Fall River, MA in 1927 when she came to join her husband, who arrived about 2 years earlier.
It was passed on to Fr. Stergios Vankopoulos (deceased) their youngest son, the former Greek Orthodox priest of Annuciation Greek Orthodox Church in Muskegan, MI. His wife, Presbytera Ann, is donating it to the Museum.
