Object Description
Purple pillow cover with gold metallic embroidery.
Origin
The items in this accession were made by Eleni Sarivalas (originally Sarivalasis) in Kios, Asia Minor in the 1910s and taken to Nea Ionia, outside of Athens, Greece when she and her family fled Asia Minor during the population exchanges in 1922.
Her brother, Fotis Makaritis, who emigrated in 1910, met Thessaly native George Makaritis in Detroit, Michigan or Chicago, Illinois. Fotis provided the introduction between Sarivalas and Makaritis on a trip back to Greece in 1930. George Makaritis returned to America in 1930 with Eleni Sarivalas Makaritis left behind, pregnant, in Greece. She and he daughter, Elizabeth Makaritis, followed in 1935. The family owned a restaurant and lived in Lexington, Virginia until 1947, when they moved to Charlottesville, Virginia.
Elizabeth Makaritis Berkeley met her husband, Edmund Berkeley, in the US History master's program at the University of Virginia, and they married in 1963. She wrote her master's thesis about the experiences of Greeks in America, focusing on Lowell, Massachusetts and Tarpon Springs, Florida.
Elizabeth and Edmund's daughter, Maria, donated the items to the National Hellenic Museum.
