A mandolin produced by Wilson Bros. Mfg. Co. in Chicago, Illinois. The mandolin is small, light brown and features eight steel strings. The body has minor damages, a worn tarnish and is missing the pick guard. Additionally, the face has a worn signature--"G. Rass"--possibly short for Gus (Constantine) Rassogianis who the mandolin was reportedly used by. He, reportedly, played it while on vacation at the family's vacation home in Michigan while their neighbor blayed the lyra.

Jar, Food-storage (2011.7.101)

This storage container has two parts, a lid and the base to be used for storage. The whole container is made of a clear glass. The lid is square in shape and on each side of it there are arch-like designs that extend outwards. There are two of these on each of the sides, each decreasing in size as they come farther out. The area where the lid fits into the base is simple and is a rougher glass to provide a seal. The opaque nature has worn off in certain areas from use. There are some areas of dirt on the inside of the lid, but not enough to make the whole thing less translucent. The base is made of the same clear glass and is more of a rectangular shape. The base also has the arch design, but only on two sides. They are more elongated due to the taller height of the base as opposed to the lid. On the base there is a circular indentation that goes up a little, into the jar's interior. As with the lid there are textured areas of dirt that has embedded itself into the jar. The areas are not restricted to one area of the base but appear in different areas and patterns. The merely fog the glass a little, they dont make it opaque.

A large, clear glass candy jar. The lid is easily liftable and made of a light metal, probably aluminum.

Mold, Candy (2011.7.117)

A metal mold used for making lamb-shaped candies. This was probably often used for chocolates.

Mold, Candy (2011.7.118)

A metal mold used for making clover-shaped candies. This was probably often used for chocolates. It is a three-leaved clover. The front has the number 1039 while the back reads "E&Co. N.Y. 1039." There is a hinge on the right side and two tabs for opening the mold on the left. The inside is rather shiny. The back of the mold is completely blank, while the front contains details for the rront of a leaf, such as the veins.

Mold, Candy (2011.7.119)

This is a metal mold used for making elephant-shaped candies or chocolate. This mold has both sides and are attached. They can be seperated but the metal flap that connects them is very tight and stuck in place. The whole thing is made of a silver metal that has been tarnished over the years. Each of the sides has the elephant shape and an outer lining for the connector to attach. The lining is where the metal is flat and lies directly against the opposite side. On one side there are two small circular indentations to also help attach it to the other piece to create the full elephant shape. There are also two numbers. Imprinted vertically by the trunk is "2308" and horizantal by the tail is "22." The elephant itself is somewhat small. The two legs are close together and the tail tucks down. The ear protrudes out futher than the rest of the body and has rounded edges. One eye is visible and just a small indentation. The trunk curves up under the neck touching it and there is a small tusk that does not extend past the trunk. The metal on this side is tarnished, although not as bad as the other side. The opposite side of the elephant is basically the same thing just reversed. The circles connecting the sides are protruding and underneath the connector is another one. The elephant is facing the opposite way and the "22" is still near the rear. There is some writing near its head but its been worn away a little bit so it is hard to make out. This side of the mold is darker and much more tarnished than its opposite. The bottom of the mold where the feet are is hollow and open to the interior.

Mold, Candy (2011.7.120)

A metal mold used for making pineapple-shaped candies. This was probably often used for chocolates. Along the top, it has the number 252. There is a tab on either side of the pineapple for opening it. The hinge is on the other side. The inside of the mold is extremely shiny.

A metal mold used for making heart-shaped candies. This was probably often used for chocolates. There is a lip along the top of the mold, and the right side comes down slightly at the top where it was welded together.

A metal mold used for making egg-shaped candies. This was probably often used for chocolates. This mold has two completely unattached pieces. The outer edge of the mold goes outward.

This object is a star-shaped cake mold. Made of metal and slightly corroded. The star has six points, and there is a flat hexagon at the bottom of the mold. Above each side of the hexagon, there is a triangle. The points of the hexagon lead to lines that form the points of the star.

This larger cake mold is in the shape of a sunflower. On the interior there is the anther, or center of the flower, and to make it there are little circles in a grid-like pattern. Extending from the anther are the petals which extend all the way to the very edge of the mold. On the sides of the mold the effect is a scalloped design with round curves. On the exterior of the petals at the very edge there is a little lip where the metal was bent outward a little to create the edge. The entire this is made of metal, most likely tin, and is silver in color. In most of the creases or protrusions the color is a darker silver due to wear and rubbing on things. There are some areas with rust , mostly in the petal indentations on the interior. The base also has quite a bit of rust from sitting on things. The petals on the sides on the outside of the tin are also darker having corroded away from handling, but most have not begun rusting yet.

Mold, Candy (2011.7.131)

This mold is for a full form once the cake or candy would have been done. The mold itself has a pumpkin shape in the center and protruding from that are flat sides making an octoganal shape, but with the square sides being larger. On those longer sides there are claps to hold the mold together. On the short sides there are little hole indentations, or protusions based on the side, that help the mold fit together. The entire thing is made of metal but is corroding so the color is a darker silver and little bits of metal and dirt fall off when handled.

Mold, Candy (2011.7.132a)

This is the bottom half of a pumpkin shaped mold. The entire thing is made out of metal, most likely tin. The flat area, which would connect to the other half of the mold is an octagonal shape, but four of the sides are longer than the corner sides. On the shorter sides there are four circular indentations that are used to help connect the two sides together. Looking at the flat side the base of the pumpkin shape goes down into the metal with grooves and veins that pumpkins have. On the opposite side both the circles and the pumpkin shape are protruding. The metal is heavily tarnished and a darker silver color that the other side of it. The edges of the flat part are also quite tarished from use and storage.

Mold, Candy (2011.7.133a)

This is a rabbit shaped mold, most likely used to make chocolate rabbits. The entire mold is made of metal and is shaped to fit the rabbit's body and pose. The block of metal is curved until the bottom half of the rabbit's body where it descends straight. This is the back of the figure and so the circles that become the connectors to the other piece which are indented. The back of the mold is where the shape of the figure is visible. The is dressed in a dress and is holding an umbrella which is pointed down on the ground. She is standing on a little outcropping of rocks and strapped to her backis a wicker basket. The hand that is not holding the umbrells is resting on her hip. The metal is a little rusted and corroded in different areas, mostly on the inside because of its use.

Mold, Candy (2011.7.134)

This small cake or cookie mold is made of metal, probably tin, and is silver in color except for spots where rust has formed. The design looks like a type of flower. At the base there is a flower with 6 petals and then further designs branch out from it that could be more petals. The lip at the top is a little extended so it's easier to either attach to another piece or just hold. It is dented in different places from age a wear. The back and raised side has become really corroded and rusty giving it a brown color. The metal also flakes off a little because of the corrosion, although the back is not completely covered, it is mostly covered.

Holder, Thread (2011.7.135)

This item is a string dispenser used for when wrapping chocolate boxes or any packages at the shop. It has a green base from which rises three arms. The fist two of these come to an equal height and hold between them a spool of string. The last arm rise up higher and has a notch to slip string into. At the bottom of this notch is a razor to cut the string. There are two holes on the bottom to attach to a countertop. In between the holes, there are instructions "For Best Service." The front is labelled with "Chicago Printed String Co." on a red plaque. There is a spool on the spool holder, also labelled with "Chicago Printed String Co." The inside of the spook is made of cardboard, whild the rims are metal.

Cover, Rolling Pin (2011.7.136)

A large, wooden rolling pin. The pin has the standard two handles and the rolling portion is ribbed. There is also a piece of cord tied to one of the handles. It was used to create equal, flat strips of candy.

Box (2011.7.139)

This tin is perfectly round and the lid has a Christmas sleigh scene covering the entire space. There is a small red house in the center of the tin surrounded by snow and some pine trees directly next to it. Behind the house are more trees but they are all bare. In the front of the house the parents are riding on a red sleigh pulled by two horses. They are waving to two children who are playing with a small dog and pulling a sled. The whole scene is pushed back and there are larger trees seemingly closer to the viewer like you are looking through them to the scene. The sides of the container which are not part of the lid are an orangeish red color. It has rust in various places . The bottom and inside of the canister are the normal silver color of the tin. There are multiple rust stains and darker areas that are from either dirt or use but most of the surface is still the shiny finish of the metal.

Pitcher (2011.7.140)

This is a one gallon tin pitcher. The entire thing is the actual metal, including the handle. The pitcher is cylindrical in shape and the very top has an extended lip that helps with pouring abilities. The lip itself is actually quite rusted around the rim and where the lip meets with the base. Indented in the metal is the measurement "1Gal. liqd" near the very top of the pitcher but right under the lip. The handle was a seperate piece but was fixed to the pitcher, possibly by welding it together. Most of the handle is not thick but where one would grip it the tin protrudes to make it easier to hold. At the very top of the handle there is a little hole, it is perfectly round and seems intentional. The interior of the pitcher is quite dirty from the metal wearing away and at the very bottom it is more textured than the rest, probably from whatever the pitcher held at Alex's Sweet Shop. The indentation is more visible from the back because the front has worn away a little bit. There is some rust along the seam of where the tin joins with itself and at the very bottom, also along the seam. The actual bottom of the pitcher has a white grainy substance on it, probably from errosion due to use and storage. The edges of the base have quite a bit of rust on them as well, but the white substance is the most textured.

Plate (2011.7.142)

Oval-shaped, ceramic dish with decorative border along rim with a decorative seal. An "O.P.Co. Syracuse China" stamp on the bottom of the dish. The decorative bordder appears to be in black and looks like connected T's. The seal appears to be an R with a ribbon below it, with the words "Hotel Rome Omaha".

Plate (2011.7.145)

Translucent, green plate. Partitioned into three serving sections. Decorative designs on the bottom of the plate. The designs are raised and show through the plate. Ther is a circle in the middle, with garlands outlining the edge, along with another set along the rim of the plate. The plate is roughly divided in half by one raised partition, and then one half of the plate is divided in half again.

Mortar (2011.7.166A)

Small wooden mortar from a mortar and pestle set. This is the bowl and it appears to be lighter than the pestel. The outside of the bowl is rougher than the inside and not as heavily stained. The natural grain of the wood is visible as are the nicks that are commonly present in this material. The inside of the mortar is darker in the very center due to use and staining of the wood. In one area there are also scratches in the wood, presumably from the pestle scraping directly against the surface. The bottom is completley flat and the entire thing is its natural color, without any staining or ingravings.

Pestle (2011.7.166B)

Small wooden pestle from a mortar and pestle set. The pestle has a rounded handle. It is worn and dirty, particularly around the handle and on the base used for grinding substances. There are many stains at various intervals, pretty much covering the whole object. The wood is a lighter wood, but it might have been the use that made it darker compared to what its original color would have been.

Bowl (2011.7.167)

This medium sized, white ceramic bowl is plain white except for three green lines on the outer side of the bowl. Two of them are directly beneath the lip of the bowl and wrap around the entire thing. The top line is thicker than the lower one, the lower one being about the width of a line drawn by a pen or pencil. The third line is lower on the bowl, at the point where it curves toward the base. This decoration is the same width as the lower one in the upper grouping. The entire bowl is completely smooth and has a glass like sheen which makes it shiny. On the lip of the very bottom it is darker and more worn due to use. On the very base of the bowl is printed the company's name who makes it. Inside of a ribbon design is the word "Sterling" and below the ribbon says "Vitrified China" in a cursive font. Direcltly below those words is the location of "East Liverpool, Ohio U.S.A" in a standard font. The interior of the bowl is a plain white, but has a few stains on it from age and storage. Most of the stains are on the top lip. The biggest is in a circular shape and seems like it is in the ceramic itself. It also might just be discoloration in the ceramic because it is a natural material.

Dish (2011.7.170)

Directly inside of that is a thinner green line, about the width of a pen line. The third line is around the very inside of the bowl, it is also a pen line width. There are marks of wear along the edges of the dish from age and use. There are also several littler marks along on the inside of the plate at random intervals. The plate iteslf is a glossy white color everywhere that the green is not. The back of the plate is completely plain except for the makers mark on the flat part of the base. It reads "Jackson Company" curving downward. Below that, strait across it says "Edward Don and Company Chicago, Illinois Distributors." There is a litte green spot above the words that is probably from the machine dripping ink. There are orange stains on the back that also have a rougher texture because they have worn away the finish. They are larger than the ones on the front but are fewer in number. They are evenly spaced around the plate and probably came from whatever it was sitting on.

The plate iteslf is a glossy white color everywhere that the green is not. The back of the plate is completely plain except for the makers mark on the flat part of the base. It reads "The Bailey-Walker Vitrified China" inside of a little book and below the book it says 5-29, all in a light green ink that has faded over time. There is a litte green spot below the words that is probably from the machine dripping ink. There are orange stains on the back that also have a rougher texture because they have worn away the finish. They are larger than the ones on the front but are fewer in number. They appear at even intervals around the plate and were probably made by whatever was holding it in the Ice Cream Shop.

Trenton, N.J." and is merely an indentation in the center of the plate on the backside, and there is no color in the lines. The finish is a shiny white. Due to age and storage there are discolorations and wear on the plates. The top part of the outer rim on this one has less finish and therefore is not as smooth as other parts of the item. It is a little darker in color and is a little textured in certain parts. There are other discolorations closer to the center of this plate and are circular in nature. they are a very faint tan color. The bottom also shows some wear. There are raised portions at various places on the lip that curves up. They are small but are noticable. On the very outside of the underside there is a textured spot that is orange in color and has a more grainy feel as opposed to the existing finish of the plate. The supporting rim also has dicoloration and texture due to use wearing away the finish.

Dish (2011.7.175)

This white plate is smaller and circular. It is completely plain with no design except for the maker's notation on the back. This reads " Cook China Co. Trenton, N.J." and is merely an indentation in the plate, there is no color in the lines. The finish is a shiny white. Due to age and storage there are discolorations and wear on the plates. The top part of the outer rim on this one has less finish and therefore is not as smooth as other parts of the item. There are also groupings of very small black dots in clusters at three spots around the edge. On the inner circle of the plate is a yellow/orange spot that has worn into the plate itself. It is a pitted texture and is smaller than the size of a dime. The bottom also shows some wear. The supporting rim of the base also has dicoloration and texture due to use wearing away the finish. On the lip that curves of there are various spots of discoloration and texture. These are all circular in nature and ranging in sizes.

Cup (2011.7.18)

A plain, unmarked glass, this item is in good condition. The glass is clear and has no indications of any serious damages or scrapes or anything across its entirety. The glass bluges slightly at the top but otherwise maintains a straight up and down body. The glass is wider at the top and slowly tapers towards the bottom. It has three bulges as it goes out. The bottom comes in slightly.

Dish (2011.7.181)

This white plate is smaller and circular. It is completely plain with no design except for the maker's notation on the back. This reads " Cook China Co. Trenton, N.J." and is merely an indentation in the plate, there is no color in the lines. The finish is a shiny white. Due to age and storage there are discolorations and wear on the plates. t is a little darker in color and is a little textured in certain parts. There is a small brown dot where the flat part of the plate starts to curve up and it is slightly raised off of the surface. The bottom also shows some wear. The supporting rim on the base also has dicoloration and texture due to use wearing away the finish. There are three circular discolorations that are spaced evenly around the plate and are probably due to how they were stored. They indent into the ceramic a little, but are not very big.

Dish (2011.7.182)

This white plate is smaller and circular. It is completely plain with no design except for the maker's notation on the back. This reads " Cook China Co. Trenton, N.J." and is merely an indentation in the plate, there is no color in the lines. The finish is a shiny white. Due to age and storage there are discolorations and wear on the plates. The top part of the outer rim on this one has less finish and therefore is not as smooth as other parts of the item. It is a little darker in color and is a little textured in certain parts. There are little yellow areas in the center area of the plate, also due to age and use. The bottom also shows some wear. The supporting rim of the base also has dicoloration and texture due to use wearing away the finish. There are three circular discolorations that are spaced evenly around the plate and are probably due to how they were stored. They indent into the ceramic a little, but are not very big.

Plaque (2011.7.187)

This is a rectangular wooden plaque with a top of a candy box cover mounted on the front. The cover is a blueish hue because it was attached with a wood stain which changed its color. The top has a grid-like patterning in the background covering the whole thing. It also has a decorative, dark blue border made of squares, within other squares. Centered in the middle is written "Alex's Sweet Shop" in bold dark blue type, with "Homemade Candies and Delicious Ice Cream" printed slightly smaller in the same color and font directly below the first phrase. Along the bottom left corner, it reads,"Net weight two pounds," centered along the bottom is "Phone Berwyn 6782," and printed in the bottom right corner "6823 Roosvelt Rd Berwyn, ILL" is printed. The top iteslf has been ripped from the box so its edges are uneven. On the back, written in pen, centered horizantally is written "This is the top of the cover of candy boxes used by Alex's Sweet Shop on 6823 W. Roosevelt Rd Berwyn, ILL on the 1930's." Along the left edge of the wood "12-B" is written in pencil. There is no known meaning for the number. The wood is fairly clean, there are some green stains in various areas such as right below the main writing and in the right lower corner. Above the writing a circular metal hanger is attached with a bent nail to the center of the plaque. Along the top of the plaque there is a brass, circlular piece of metal attached which stands straight up into the air so the object can be hung.

Contract (2011.7.188)

This is the original lease for Alex's Candy Shop. The lease is framed in a dark-stained, wooden frame and is lined in an inner, red framing. The lease begins with "This Agreement," printed large, in bold, in the top left hand corner, with the rest of the lease a mixture of typed generic lease wording and written, specific information. Information on the Lease: Signed on May 1, 1906 between Joseph W. Filetz and John Rassogianis for the discussed property in Chicago, IL in Cook County. The lease exptends from May 1, 1906 to May 1, 1911 for the sum of $3,600 payable on the first of every month to the office of Joseph Filetz. At the bottom of the lease, in the right hand corner, both Joseph W. Filetz and John Rossogianis signed their name. On the back of the frame is a wire attached on both ends of the frame by two small rings, used for hanging purposes, in addition to a silver sticker in the bottom, right hand corner, that reads, "Carlson Paint & Art Stores Quality Printing."

Advertisement (2011.7.191)

This is an advertisement for the Two-in-One Ice Cream Freezer. The advertisement reads, "Make your own Ice Cream -- Earn the Manufacturer's Profit" printed largely at the top of the ad. Below it, on the left, in slightly smaller text, it reads, "A New Business Opportunity For Progressive Merchants Everywhere" and on the right, "Two-in-Onr Automatic Freezer Advantages." Numbers 1-10 then descend down the right side of the ad, in bold black type, with ten advantages of the freezer listed next to a corresponding number. In the middle of the advertisement there is a color picture of the Two-in-One , with "Two-in-One 5 Gallon Freezer and Horizontal Cabniet" printed underneath. In the bottom left-hand corner, there is a section boxed type for those interested in the freezer to fillout and mail to 6822 West Roosevelt Road, Berwyn, ILL.

Soap (2011.7.192)

This is a box of Fairbank's Gold Dust Washing Powder. The box is bright orange and is encased in a plastic covering. The front of the box has two black figures, "the twins" under the Fairbank's logo, standing in a pile, of what appears to be, coins. On the right side panel, images of the same black figures are used to show the different purposes of the washing poweder like, brightening linoleum, removes bath tub ring, washed dirty work clothes and makes glassware sparkle. On the left side panel, "washes dishes quickly, removes grease easily, brightens woodwork and cleans paint brushes" is shown. The back of the box has "Gold Dust let the twins do your work" written in black, bold type across the back. Below this is a box that describes how to use Gold Dust to perform up to 34 cleaning jobs, with more images and illustrations of the twins in the background.

Stick, Mixing (2011.7.194)

This is a small, short and largely unimpressionable stick that may have been used for mixing. It has no apparent details other than that on one end it has a small hole through which is looped a metal hanger and the other has been or worn to a dull point. The wood is a light color and has darker spots from dirt and wear.

Spoon (2011.7.195)

This is a large, flat wooden spoon. The entire object has been made from one solid piece of wood and seems well worn--as if it had been used a lot. The curves of the edges are asymmetrical as if this was made by hand. It is not readily apparent what this object was used for.

Scoop, Ice-cream (2011.7.198)

This ice cream scoop is made of metal and wood. The handle is the wooden part and is made of a smooth black wood with a ridge near the top of the wooden piece for an easier grip. There is a gold attachment that connects the wood to the rest of the scoop and it is perfectly round. The metal of the actual scoop part is silver and very smooth. There is some tarnish from being used, but it could still be used easily in the state it is in. The scoop's shape is somewhat rectangular and one of the sides is bent in a little. This is because of an indentation into the metal to label the makers of the scoop. This mark has words inside a small circle which say "Wagner MFG. Co. Sidney.O," with the "MFG Co" in a smaller font than the rest. This indentation is the only marking of decoration on the piece.

Set, Salt & Pepper (2011.7.201)

This is a pepper shaker made out of white milkglass and a metal lid. The glass itself is in a rectangular shape and has ridges on the flat edges because the corners are rounded. The ridges provide grip and more dimension to the functional aspects of the object. On one of the sides there is a diagonal strip where the ridges are flat so a label can be attached. It once said pepper but now only "pepp" is visible because the end is no longer attached. The label is silver and embossed to spell the word. It also has a border around the edges that is just a simple geometric square border. The cap is a silver metal that screws onto the bottle by spiral ridges. On the top there are holes for the pepper to come out. Due to age and wear there are also some stains and rust on the top and in the grooves on the sides.

Set, Salt & Pepper (2011.7.204)

This is a simple sugar shaker made out of a thin and cheaper silver metal. It has a circular perforated top that can unscrew to open. The top is dented a little, particularly along the edges but still intact. There are a few rivets for the twist off feature on the sides of the shaker. The lower sides and bottom are completely plain. There is a handle made of the same material that is attached with little studs. The metal is dirty and a little pitted from use and age. The silver color is a little tarnished because of the dirt but still bright. The cap does not go on the shaker all the way but does mostly fit.

Opener, Bottle (2011.7.206)

This bottle opener is made of a heavy, solid metal and has a 45 degree bend about halfway down its length. The metal itself is a dark silver but due to rust and age it has become darker and more brown in some areas. The object is entirely smooth. There is a little shape carved into the rounded side of the handle that is probably a maker's mark symbol but it is somewhat hard to make out.

Opener, Bottle (2011.7.207)

This bottle opener is made of a heavy, solid metal and has a 45 degree bend about halfway down its length. The metal itself is a dark silver but due to rust and age it has become darker and more brown in some areas. The object is entirely smooth. The handle is rounded for an easier grip and it has a serial number imprinted on it which reads "9993416" with a circle after the last number. The bend in the metal is not as wide or large as the handle. It has extra supports on the sides which are a little thinner that the main piece of metal it is made of. This stem is connected to the actual opener component. The opener is completely flat and boxy on the longer end except for the very tip wich is curved down to provide a clamp. The little piece is not as long as the clamp side and is completely flat on the edge that's closer to the other protrusion, yet rounded on the opposite side. The entire thing is plain with no color or ornamentation.

Pan, Baking (2011.7.209)

This is a smaller sized baking pan with lipped edges along all four sides. The pan is also quite rusty in many areas because it is made of metal, most likely tin. None of the rust spots have eaten all the way through the pan but on the bottom of the pan they are deeper than the ones on the inside. The rust is an orange color with a black outline in certain places. In the pan's basin there are three circular spots that have rust in the center but are brighter silver on the outsides of the spots. The rest of the pan is a darker silver color but the worn away areas are highly contrasted in comparison. The bottom is slightly worn, but not as bad as the top. There are rough patches and rust as well as dirt on the edges of the pan.

Candy Mold (2011.7.21)

This is a large, metal mold of a bunny. It is actually two metal sides of a bunny which are clamped together by small metal clips.

Dish, Sauce (2011.7.210)

This metal sauce dish is circular except for a lip on one of the edges which has a flat end. On the inside of the dish, on the side with the lip there are little protrusions which make a smiley face in the metal. The metal itself is silver and somewhat thin. At the top of the dish the metal curves out to make a little lip. There is a simple base that just supports the whole container. The condition is quite rusted and eroding so the silver color is darker now.

Stand, Book (2011.7.215)

This stand is made of a light metal. The bottom of the piece has two lips that go upwards on the sides. In between these lips there is a rippling in the metal for another piece to lock into in order to hold the object. Next to the wave constructionthe metal curves up in a loop to act as a joint for the other piece. The square metal piece that the bottom is connected to is completely flat except for a loop joint about halfway up it. This connects to the stand mechanism that fits into the base. The middle piece is what the object leans against. The metal is a little tarnished, but it still moves easily.

Box, Food Storage (2011.7.218)

A small, off-white flat box with yellow and blue accents, with a 1 fluid pint capacity. The top of the box says, "Ice Cream" in blue on a yellow background, right above an illustration of a man in a horsedrawn carraige. The sides of the box have small white illustrations of couples engaged in dancing and dog walking. One side indicates the manufacturer, Chicago Carton Company. It reads "Pint U. S. Standard No. L-2 Chicago Carton Company, Chicago, Illinois, Pat. No. 1992222. Design No. 78 LP. Copyright 1945." Each side flap reads "Parafined Carton, To keep fine flavor and quality."

Box, Candy (2011.7.22)

A middle-sized candy box that has "Merry Christmas" written across it's front. It's front is mostly gold and red, has wreaths, candles and an image of the North Star and is on the whole has a very vintage seasonal feel.

Box, Candy (2011.7.225)

This is a top of a candy box covering. The cover is blue with grid-like patterning in the background and a decorative, dark blue border made of squares, within other squares. It has "Alex's Sweet Shop" centered, in bold dark blue type, with "Homemade Candies and Delicious Ice Cream" printed slightly smaller in the same color and font below it. Along the bottom, it reads,"Net weight two pounds" in the bottom left corner, "Phone Berwyn 6782" centered along the bottom and "6823 Roosvelt Rd Berwyn, ILL" printed in the bottom right hand corner. The sides of the paper are very frayed and look as though they may have been burned or ripped.

Letter (2011.7.226)

This is, what seems to be, a letter of some kind written on "Allied Confectioners Association" stationary/paper. At the top of the paper is "Allied Confectionary Association" with Chicago, IL printed underneath it, and "3459 W. 26th St" handwritten in cursive written above Chicago. The paper had been previously folded into eighths, indicated by the folds left on the paper. There is a hole in the middle of the paper. On the paper is a paragraph written in Greek, sometime in June of 1928. Under the body of the letter, is it signed by 12 signatures on the front with an additional 27 signatures on the back, Alex Rassogianis being one of them.

Negative, Film (2011.7.228)

These are the negtives from a photograph of a seven group portrait. The photo strip contains two negatives and is permanently bent at the top. The negatives are contained in a small, white, wax envelope/sheath. The group consists of three children.

This is a stack of 25 small, half pint cardboard ice cream containers. The fronts and backs of the containers are identical and off-white in color. The background is a blue, grid pattern with a large white triangle in the middle. "Ice Cream" in large blue letters is printed on the triangle, with "one half pint" printed below it. There are three small, decorative stars running along the bottom of the container, on all four sides. The top portion of the container is comprised of four flaps, when folded, seal the container. On one of the flaps is a small triangle with printed information about the container itself printed inside. It states "1/2 Pint liquid Minn. Serial No. 24, Fill to top." There is a woven, string handle attached at two sides.

The two sides have the same decorative design, without the text. The top of the containers have four flaps, when folded, that seal the box. There is text indicating patent number and volume of the container on the front and back flaps. The front reads "Contents one half pint, U.S. liquid measure, Approved for Massachusetts M-6" While the back reads: "N.Y. City approved type 109, Serial V-4, Penna. Approved Type No. V-4" The bottom of the lowest crate has a white sticker that says "Pauline Franks" There is a woven string handle attached to the sides of the container.

This is a medium sized pastry bag. Is is "V" shaped with a metal grommet in the top left and openings at both ends. The bag is an off-white canvas cloth material.There is a seam along the side with the metal circle in it, as well as seams at the top and bottom.

This is a folded pastry bag in its original wax paper packaging. The packaging is a brownish-yellow wax paper, significantly ripped in many places. The label on the packaging has the brand, "Ateco," printed in the top left corner of the label. This is a 3D display piece of a boy riding in a horse drawn cart. The boy appears to be young and is wearing a green hat and yellow shirt. The cart is on two large wheels drawn by a large, running horse. There are flaps in the middle of the cart that can be folded down to hold it in a 3D position. On the back of the cart, in very small print, is printed "Game Makers. Inc. NY, USA."

Piece, Display (2011.7.237)

This is a 3D display piece of an elderly riding in a mule drawn cart. The man is wearing a yellow hat, white collared shirt with overalls and appears to be holding a large pink object. The cart is drawn by a running mule and is on one large red wheel, with one wheel missing. The mule has ared harness. There are two flaps on the inside that fold down to hold the cart in place. On the back of the cart is printed, in very small print, "Game Makers. Inc. NY, USA."

Sign, Trade (2011.7.238)

This is a large, rectangular Coca-Cola sign. It is predominantly green with red and yellow accents. At the top is written, in yellow, "Fountain Service." In the middle is a large red box with "Drink Coca Cola" written largely in white in a script font and "Delicious and Refreshing" printed below that.

Card, Business (2011.7.247)

This is one of Alex Rassogianis' business cards. His name is printed in black in the center of the card, with "St Louis Ice Cream Parlor" printed underneath it, and "Confectionary, Cigarettes, Cigars and Tobacco" printed under that. In the bottom left hand corner is the store's address, 2601 S. St. Louis Avenue, with "Chicago" printed in the bottom right hand corner. In the top left hand corner is "Phone Rockwell 3053" and in the top right hand corner, a small logo of some sort and the number 546.

Card, Business (2011.7.248)

This is one of Alex Rassogianis' business cards. His name is printed in black in the center of the card, with "St Louis Ice Cream Parlor" printed underneath it in bolder lettering. "Confectionary, Cigarettes, Cigars and Tobacco" printed under that, with a thick black line running above it. In the bottom left hand corner is the store's address, 2601 S. St. Louis Avenue, with "Chicago" printed in the bottom right hand corner. In the top right hand corner is "Phone Rockwell 3053" and in the top left hand corner is a small depiction of a bowl of various fruits. There is writing on the back of the business card, possibly written by Alex's girlfriend at the time.

Card, Admittance (2011.7.249)

This is a ticket stub for the Grand Charity Ball. The ticket is light blue. According to the print on the ticket, the ball was held on Wednesday, November 9, 1932 at the Medinah Athletic Club at 505 N. Michigan Avenue. The event was sponsored by The Young Ladies Hellenic Societies.

Box, Candy (2011.7.25)

A medium Christmas chocolates holder, this item is split from its bottom left corner to the top right corner by a wreath of mistletoe. In the center of the box is also an image of four bells and "Holiday Greetings" in gold font. Finally, in the top left corner there is an image of the North Star. The box also contains some wax paper.

Booklet (2011.7.251)

This is a small informational booklet, entitled "History of Penicillin: The Wonder Drug," a small booklet commonly sold in the 1950s in stores such as Alex's Candy Shop. At the top of the front cover it says "The Latest Chicago Street Guide" with the title printed underneath it On the bottom of the cover is a small blurb about the booklet's contents, "Educational Information in Regard to Health Which Every Man and Woman Should Know." On the back cover is a 1950-1951 calendar. The first few pages of the booklet provide information on the history of Penicillin, when to use it, how it works and where to go to find it. There are a few illustrations and pictures. The middle section of the booklet is a street guide to the city of Chicago. The last section of of the booklet is about the dangers and health risks associated with masturbation and sexually transmitted diseases, followed by information about where you can go to get help and treatment for these issues.

Envelope (2011.7.252)

This is a tax bill envelope from Herman Krumdick, Town Collector from Berwyn, Illinois sent to Alex Rassogianis. There is a red, two cent postage stamp in the right corner. The time stamp is dated March 5, 1932, 6:30 PM. In bold, black lettering, in the center of the envelope is "Tax Bill. If this is not your bill please return to the Mail Man," with "Tax Bill" and "Mail Man" underlined. Above this is a translucent viewing window to see the envelope's contents. The envelope flap is torn about half way off. Inside the envelope is an additional envelope addressed to Alex Rassogianis at 6822 Roosevelt Road, Berwyn, ILL time stamped on May 9, 1931 at 3:30 PM in Chicago. There is a red, two cent stamp in the top right hand corner. Inside this inner envelope are severel additional documents. There is a letter from the Association of Real Estate Taxpayers of Illinois dated April 24, 1931. The letter is accompanied by an official receipt acknowledging Mr. Rassogianis' membership and legal fees and his membership card. There is also a small lined peice of white paper with the number 4400 printed on it. Lastly, there are two yellow tax bills.

Key (2011.7.253)

This is an old fashioned, silver key possibly from the St. Louis Candy Shop location. The key is rusting in a number of places. At the head, enscribed into the metal is "Gorbin." There is a black string tied to the head of the key.

Key (2011.7.254)

This is a silver key from Alex's Candy Shop. The key is more of a modern shape and size. The head of the key is bordered by decorative dots. On one side of the head is the word "Barrows" and on the other, "431472." There is a yellow and red ribbon tied to the head of the key. "Alex's Candy Shop" is printed on the ribbon in addition to its address. There is a small peice of paper attached to the ribbon, as well.

Book, Address (2011.7.256)

This is a small "little black book". The book is bound in a black leather, with "notebook" printed on the front. About half of the book's pages are written on, in pen and pencil. Entries vary in subject but include: peoples' addresses, payment records, price lists and other various lists.

This a fountain menu from Alex's Candy Shop. The menu is bound in green leather, with "Fountain Menu" printed on the front, contained in a decorative border. The corners are reinforced with small metal edges. It is a two paged menu, printed on bright orange paper, under a protective plastic covering. The left page lists prices for menu items under the headings: "Crushed Fruit," "Fruit Nut Sundaes," "Fancy Sundaes," and "Specials." There is a hole burned into the plastic covering right above the "Specials" section. The right page contains the "Frappe," "Beverages," and "Hot Drinks in Season" sections in addtion to a hand written specials section.

A two-legged, black and red wax paper roll holder. The item has no determinable maker but does have "CMC" printed down the sides of its two legs.

Notebook (2011.7.261)

This is a black notebook from the Allied Confectioner's Association from 1927, as indicated by the hand written title page. The notebook has alphabetized tabs and seems to have been used primarily as an address book. The right pages contain addresses, while the left pages contain a chart keeping record of something, per address, perhaps of a payment.

Book, Account (2011.7.262)

This is a book of check receipts from 1919/1920. The book is bound in a thick black cardboard material, with a red/brown binding. Almost every page is written on. Checks of particular interest: Check #200 was a check sent to the donor's father while he was away in Greece during WWI. It was writtten to Constan. J. Rassogianis on Sept. 29, 1919 for $15.00. Check #238 was a check sent to John's wife in Greece before she came to America. It was written to Paleteme Rassogianis on November 18, 1919 for $25.00. Check #255 was written on November 18, 1919 to a "F. Kvasnika," who may have been the owner of the St. Louis store property for the amount of $70.00.

Book, Account (2011.7.263)

This a single-entry ledger/cash book. The book is bound is a cloth covering. The front has a highly detailed, decorative border. Across the center, at a slight angle is printed "Single Entry Ledger." Above that, hand written in pencil, is 'Cash Book." The back of the book also has a detailed border. There are brown stains all over the front and back of the ledger. The first six pages of the ledger are organized by alphabetized sections. In the "F G H I" section is a hand written note, "Chi-Herald-American Page 53." In the "Q R S T" section is written "Chicago Tribune Page 50" and " Chicago Times Page 53." The first page after the alphabetized sections is numbered in the top right hand corner as Page 11. At the top of page 11 is written, in pencil, "Start Oct 15th $19.43" and "Oct 1943." Under this, on the lined page, are twenty separate money entries that occured between October 15th and December 6th. Each entry has a date, person or organization and monetary amount. Page 51 is titled "Chicago Trib. 1940" and has 21 individual entries written underneath it, ranging from $1.47 - $5.20. Page 53 is titled "Chi-Herald-American" and has 15 individual entries ranging from $2.00 - $2.40.

Watch, Pocket (2011.7.264a)

This is a gold Elgin pocket watch, that belonged to either John or Alex Rassogianis. The front and back of the watch are decorated with floral designs. The top/button has an attached 12.5 inch chain. The interior of the pocket watch is missing the glass.

Invoice (2011.7.264b)

This is the reciept for the gold Elgin pocket watch, that belonged to either John or Alex Rassogianis. The reciept is dated January 12, 1914 from A. Klier Jeweler and Watch Maker, on 3609 W. 26th Street. There is a hand written description of the watch, including its 20 year guarantee. The watch cost $23.00. The reciept is folded in eighths, and torn in places.

Ring (2011.7.265)

This is a silver (?) Masonic ring that belonged to Alex Rassogianis. The sides of the ring are engraved with detail and the face of the ring has three letters of some kind engraved into its surface.

Razor (2011.7.266)

This is a straight-edge razor in a sheath. The razor folds into a plastic yellow handle peice, with intricate detailed carved into the surface. On the blade it says, "J. Wiss & Sons Newark, NJ." The razor is placed in a cardboard sheath, with is then placed into a two part additional sheath. Most of the lettering has been worn or peeled off, but it reads "Lion Brand."

Box, Candy (2011.7.268)

This is a medium-sized, red striped candy box. There is a large forest green bow attached to the top of the box. On top of the bow are gold, red and green leaves in a floral arrangement, with three small red berries in the center. Additionally, there is a hand written price tag of $3.45 taped to the bow. The inside of the box in lined in wax paper, with a floral design printed on it.

Wrapper (2011.7.269)

This is a stack of 254 individual candy wrappers. Each wrapper consists of a small peice of wax paper and a peice of colored foil, with gold, pink or blue. Each is 3.5 in x 2.75 in.

Wax Paper Roll (2011.7.27)

A large roll of paper and the spindle upon which is rests. The paper is a light greenish color with a faint pattern. The spindle for the roll is polished wood and besides being slightly worn (from rolling in the metal dispenser) at its ends is in normal condition.

Dispenser, Beverage (2011.7.28)

A hard plastic paper cup dispenser/holder, this item is black and loosely hourglass-shaped. It has little to no damages and tapers slightly more gradually than the bottom. Additionally, there is a small hole going through the center of the object, with six nubs sticking out on the inside. The bottom says "Made expressly for PC cups," "Patent Pending," ana "Paper contain MFG Co Chicago."

Mixer, Ice-cream (2011.7.29)

This is a aqua green, Hamilton Beach "Drinkmaster" mixer. it was probably used most as a milkshake mixer though other applications could have applied. The body of the machine is green while the head (where the motor is housed) is chrome finished. The entirety of the machine (besides the cord) is metal.

Pot, Chocolate (2011.7.31)

A very large, heavy duty copper pot. Pitted and dented across its surface, this item shows how much it was used. It also has two large handles on it's sides.

Candy Jar (2011.7.35)

Large glass jar, probably used for storage of candies of one form or another. The jar is not too dissimilar in shape to a tiny wooden barrel. In fact, the seams in the glass mimick the look with two skinny bands wrapping around the bottle and numerous wider, bowing bands running up and down the bottle's length. The top of the bottle has the threading for a metal top, but that has been missplaced.

Wax Paper Roll (2011.7.36)

A large roll of paper. The paper is a Christmas-themed item covered in mistletoe and the words "Merry Christmas" and "New Year". Additionally, the roll has metal cups pressed into either end, presumably to be used as rolling points for when it is mounted and being used.

Box, Candy (2011.7.37)

A large, green candy box. This box is a Christmas item as it has a large red bow (to compliment it's green wrapping) adorned with a large, fake mistletoe wreathe. Inside the box is matching wax paper.

A small, yellow candy box. This box is an Easter item as it has numerous images of rabbits and painted eggs across its surface.

Box, Candy (2011.7.39)

A small, pink candy box. This box is an Easter item as it has numerous images of Spring animals (and their offspring), flowers and painted eggs across its surface. There are pictures of lambs, bunnies, and children. There are also flowers. The color of the box are pink, white, purple, and green. The bottom of the box is a white color. On each short end of the box, there are marks on either side where the paper had to be cut to be folded.

The bag has white boxes with red bowties, along with a green drum. The roof is covered in snow, and there are brick rectangles on either side. The figure of Santa is wearing a white belt with a green buckle. The back of the box is cut in the same shape. The box itself is red. It is stored in a cardboard box with red writing that says "XMas" as well as black writing that reads "One 1 lb. No. 802"

A scan of Alex Rassogianis' original business card for the St. Louis Candy Shop. The photo has no picture frame of any kind yet shows little damage. The card reads "Alex Rassogianis, St. Louis Ice Cream Parlor; Confectionary, Fruits, Cigars and Tobacco.

A plain, clear glass ice cream dish. Presumably used for banana split sundaes, this item has some markings and curvature in the glass. There are lines along the base, which flare out on the outside of the glass and come to a point near the top.

A photographic postcard of Gus Rassogianis, the middle brother, taken in the 1920 when he arrived int he US. The image is of Gus Rassogianis standing alongside a railing and a table with a vase. He is wearing a long winter coat and a hat and is resting his arm along the railing.

A plain, clear glass bowl. The bowl's sides are polygonal with vertical and horizontal striations and the bottom has striations originating in the center and working outwards towards the edges. The tops of thes side designs are rounded.

Cup, Coffee (2011.7.96)

A small, white coffee cup with a blue band at the rim. Additionally, there is a small image of a ship anchor on the side opposite of the handle. The anchor has a rope around it. The bottom of the cup says "103". There is also a streak of blue going down the small handle.

Jar, Food-storage (2011.7.99)

This storage container has two parts, a lid and the base to be used for storage. The whole container is made of a clear glass. The lid is square in shape and on each side of it there are arch-like designs that extend outwards. There are two of these on each of the sides, each decreasing in size as they come farther out. The area where the lid fits into the base is simple and is a rougher glass to provide a seal. The opaque nature has worn off in certain areas from use. There are some areas of dirt on the inside of the lid, but not enough to make the whole thing less translucent. The base is made of the same clear glass and is more of a rectangular shape. The base also has the arch design, but only on two sides. They are more elongated due to the taller height of the base as opposed to the lid. On the base there is a circular indentation that goes up a little, into the jar's interior. As with the lid there are textured areas of dirt that has embedded itself into the jar. The areas are not restricted to one area of the base but appear in different areas and patterns. The merely fog the glass a little, they dont make it opaque.
