Object Description
Matted black-and-white photograph of the 1922 100th Anniversary celebration of Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire. Scene is in front of a church in Tripoli with large crowds and dancers in traditional Greek dress.
Origin
Photograph donated by George Galanopoulos. 1922 was the 100th Anniversary of the War of Greek Independence against the Ottoman Empire. The celebration of Greek independence is both a national celebration and a religious celebration dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The church is Saint Vasilios Cathedral in Tripoli. Tripoli was an important target for the Greek revolutionaries during the war with the Ottomans, as the city served as a key administrative center for the Ottomans in the Peloponesse.
