Object Description
Rectangular wood and cast lead printing block. The print image is portrait of a young male from the shoulders up. The man is facing down and to the left. A toga is draped over his far shoulder. The man has a head of thick curly hair.
Origin
Donated by John Damianos. The printing block was used in a linotype printing machine. Linotype presses allowed for the casting of entire lines to be printed at a time. Linotype printing was eventually succeeded by lithograph printing and computer typesetting during the 1960's and 1970's. This printing block was used by the Chicago-based, Greek Art Printing Company. This printing image was used for the printing of event programs for the Hellenic Professional Society of Illinois' 1959 Annual Dinner Dance. The Hellenic Professional Society of Illinois was founded in 1925 by a group of Greek-immigrant professionals. The Society's mission is: to uphold the honor and dignity of the professions represented by its membership; to cultivate a spirit of good fellowship; to encourage and promote education and learning and to cooperate with other organizations of professional people in promoting the arts, letter and sciences, especially those enhancing the Hellenic spirit and culture. The Society holds events for recognizing graduates of Hellenic descent, lectures on cultural, historical, and business topics, social and philanthropic events. The Society also raises money to support institutions such as the National Hellenic Museum. The image is also used in the printing of sponsor pages for the Apollo Bakery and Food Mart in the Dinner-Dance programs of the Philanthropic Society "Neo Skopos." The Apollo Bakery and Food Mart was located at 2707 W. Lawrence Avenue, Chicago.
