Object Description
This is a 1 drachma coin from the year 1976. On the front side is a portrait of Greek revolutionary hero Constantine Kanaris. He appears in a similiar fashion to U.S. presidents on American coins. His name is inscribed in greek letters to the left of his head. The back of the coin features a large sailboat surrounded by Greek words that may say "Hellenic Democratia". Under the sailboat is the word "drachma" written in Greek. Under the word "drachma" is the number 1 sandwiched between the number 1976. The coin has a bronze color and is made of nickel and brass. Its edge is milled. The entire coin has lost its shine and is a very dull bronze color. The back of the coin is very dirty, with patches of dirt appearing in many places.
Origin
The coin was minted in 1976, two years after the Third Hellenic Republic formed. This coin was part of the first group of coins minted during this regime. Constantine Kanaris, the man who appears on the coin, is a heroic Greek historical figure. He was incredibly successful in defeating Ottoman fleets during the Greek Revolution of the 1820's. Later in his life, he became Prime Minister and had a successful political career. The sailboat on the back of the coin is in reference to his abilities as a ship captain.
