Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church was founded in 1927 at it’s current location on Winona Street on the North Side of Chicago, along with it’s Solon Greek School. Initially constructed as a simple Parish and Greek Parochial School, the St. Demetrios Church and it’s school have grown dramatically over the years to become one of the leading Greek Orthodox Churches in North America. Located on a humble side street on the north side of Chicago St. Demetrios Church has served the Greek Orthodox Community in a humble manner for the past 80 years serving to the needs of over 650 stewards. A Greek Cultural Center, the George P. Kokalis library, gymnasium, and massive auditorium were established in the early 1960’s and served as a gateway for thousands of immigrants from Greece to the new world. St. Demetrios has many active and vibrant auxiliary organizations and is home to the Ladies Philoptochos Society, whose philanthropic efforts have benefited the Greek Community. Active organizations serving young and old exist today including, the “Young at Heart” senior citizen groups, GOYA, YAL, YP, Mom’s & Tot’s, an athletic league, along with the Greek School, and Religious Education Programs. Our community has been sheparded over the last 15 years by Rev. Fr. Apostolos N. Georgiafentis, and is currently assisted by Rev. Fr. Peter J. Sarolas. Saint Demetrios has married over 2,900 couples, baptized over 7,000 children, and buried over 3,000 faithful.
