Object Description
Woven on a home loom by Eftichia Tsakas (donor's mother's sister-in-law) and her sisters at their home in Preveza, Greece. Strips were sewn together to form a blanket which was made for dowry. It was given to Effie Gekas (donor's mother) in 1967. This is one strip of the blanket or wall hanging, it is made of turquoise and white wool. At the ends of the blanket there are small white tassels and the pattern is a repeat of a rectangle with four squares on its corners and a line border around each of the small sections. In the corners of each pattern section it makes a "x."
Origin
The father of the donor, Michael Gekas (Athanasios Gekas), was born in 1909 in Glina, Epirus, Greece. He came to Chicago in 1926 and was a tailor. The donor's mother is Effie Gekas was born in 1920 in Parga, Epirus, Greece. Michael and Effie's families knew each other and the two met when he came back to Greece in 1936. They got married in 1936-37 and moved to Chicago where they had a daughter and a son.
