Object Description
A framed needlework picture in a red frame made by the donor's mother's sister, Elpida Tsakis for her dowry. The border on the linen is a maroon and red alternating squares. Inside that there is a border of maroon lines with the corners having a design that somewhat resembles flowers. Then there is another line of squares and on the inside there are two swans on each side that face each other in the corners. Behind the swans there is a red flower and at the top of their wings a diamond shape with the colors maroon and red.
Origin
The father of the donor, Michael Gekas (Athanasios Gekas), was born in 1909 in Glina, Epirus, Greece. He came to Chicago in 1926 and was a tailor. The donor's mother is Effie Gekas was born in 1920 in Parga, Epirus, Greece. Michael and Effie's families knew each other and the two met when he came back to Greece in 1936. They got married in 1936-37 and moved to Chicago where they had a daughter and a son.
