Object Description
The fez hat belongs to Michael Gekas, who was a member of AHEPA. The hat is a maroon felt hat with AHEPA in yellow on the front over the symbol of a bird over a blue cross with green leaves in a circle around it. There are two swords crossing behind the cross and yellow lines coming out of the cross. On the inside along the bottom edge is a brown hard fabric and a tag stiched in it. There is a light blue and white tassel coming from the top of the hat.
Origin
The father of the donor, Michael Gekas (Athanasios Gekas), was born in 1909 in Glina, Epirus, Greece. He came to Chicago in 1926 and was a tailor. The donor's mother is Effie Gekas was born in 1920 in Parga, Epirus, Greece. Michael and Effie's families knew each other and the two met when he came back to Greece in 1936. They got married in 1936-37 and moved to Chicago where they had a daughter and a son.
