Object Description
A single brown-framed picture of Eleftherios Venizelos. The frame is in fair condition with various nicks, scratches, and scuffs on it. The glass covering is in good condition with no scratches or cracks. The picture itself depicts Eleftherios seated, looking slightly to the (stage) right. He is wearing a black suit with a white undershirt and black bowtie.

The picture iteself has what looks like soot marks from a possible fire, or exposure to smoke.
Origin
Eleftherios Venizelos was a prominent Greek revolutionary and politican from Crete. Elected several times as Prime Minister of Greece and served from 1910 to 1920 and from 1928 to 1932. Venizelos had such profound influence on the internal and external affairs of Greece that he is credited with being "the maker of modern Greece", and he is still widely known as the "Ethnarch".

Many Greeks, especially Cretens, kept a portrait of Venizelos in their home as a way to remember him and what he stood for. This particular photograph was printed here in Chicago, and framed in Chicago, showing a distinct transfer of cultural values from the old world to the new.

This portrait was hung in the house of the donor for over a decade.
