The background of the bottom third of the image is green, to represent grass. The box is made of wood. The interior, in which the icon sits, is covered with a layer of bright red velvet. The frame is gold-painted wood and has four screws to hold the pieces together. The box is not securely attached to the frame. There is red text in Greek that says "Saint Demetrius the Angel-martyr."

This icon depicts Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki. Saint Demetrius was a Christian martyr from the early 4th century. He is an important Orthodox military saint and the patron saint of Thessaloniki. After his death, he was believed to have miraculously saved the city from various attacks during the Early Middle Ages.
