Object Description
This is a colored painting on a wooden tablet. The painting depicts an elderly, bearded, robed man holding a baby clothed in white. He is presenting the child to three other robed people. The one of the far left is holding two birds in a cage as the middle person is reaching towards the child. All five people in the painting have halos. The background of the painting is a bronze color. There is a hanging wire attached to the back of the wooden tablet.
Origin
Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. Primarily celebrated in Eastern Orthodox Religions. Signifiying the end of Epiphany, celebrated on February 2. Event depicted in the Gospel of Luke 2:22-40. Mary and Joseph take Baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem 40 days after his birth to complete Mary's ritual purification after child birth. Ceremony usually involves the sacrifice of a lamb, however, the poor often sacrificed doves.
