Object Description
Crocheted ecru table cloth. Alternating circle and square pattern.

Cream colored cotton yarn. Each row of the tablecloth has an alternating circle and squre pattern. In each circle and square pattern there is a filled circle in the middle. In the filled circle there is a hole in the very center with a small length of string hanging out. The filled circle that is inside the larger circle is bigger than the filled circle of square. The larger filled circle is surrounded by a hill pattern that circles around it. The smaller filled circle is surrounded by three lines in a square shape that get bigger further away from the circle it gets. There are verticle short lines that connect the three lines that form a square. The circle pattern forms the edge of the tablecloth.
Origin
Catherine Terovolas made a similar tablecloth for each one of her children.

At the end of the 19th century, crochet tablecloths became popular due to the rise in immigrants from Europe. Additionally, floral motifs tablecloths were inspired from Art Nouveau.

Crocheted tablecloths remained popular through the 20th century. However, by the 1930s printed cotton tablecloths became inexpensive. Also, these tablecloths had cheerful patterns which was desired throughout the Depression.
