Object Description
Octagonal wooden box used to store stefana (1999.5.1) Doily and picture of Mary are glued to bottom. Wooden cross is included but detached. Gold "rope" detail around interior. Glass is missing from front. The front lifts up on a hinge. The edge of the lid is decorated with ovals.
Origin
A stefana is a wedding crown used in Greek Orthodox weddings. This box stored the stefanas belonging to Helen and Michael Mitchell. In the Orthodox religion, Mary is often honored. The Greek word for Mary is Theotokos, meaning "Mother of God." In the Orthodox religion, it is believed that Mary was forever a virgin, even after the birth of Christ.
