Object Description
Fine, white cotton nightgown with square neck and short sleeves.  Delicate tatting decorates both the neckline and edges of the sleeves. A charming eyelet lace design of flowers and baskets embellishes the front of the gown just below the neck line. There are slits for a waistband on either side of the gown, but no cord.
Origin
the Donors mother embroidered this herself for her dowery.

Katina Moraitou was born in Tsesme, Turkey in 1889. She was the oldest os eight children. Her father nicholas was a tobacco grower and also worked as an accountat and manager of a large farm. With the turmoil that was going on in Turkey the family left and settled in Greece on the island of Chios. the family had lost everything and thus scatterd to survive: Nicholas and his youngest son went to France, while anothe son, George came to america. Katina followed George and worked for a manufactuer of fine clothing. She brought with her, her dowery which she had embroidered as a young girl.
