Object Description
Small woven tablecloth. Pink and black square, embroidered geometric design 25" x 25" with pink fringe made out of loops. One side, however, has red fringe indicating object handmade. The cloth has geometric shapes on it. There are two thick stripes with rectangles of pink and black down each side, which intersect to make a finer checked pattern. The rest of the cloth is covered with plus signs, with a thin pink one in the middle surrounded by a thicker black one, which is in turn outlined by pink.
Origin
Elaborately embroidered household items were often seen as a mark of status or wealth. It was also used to reinforce cloth and as a part of a girl's transition into womanhood. This appears to have been created using the counted thread technique, which ensures that all of the stitches come out evenly.
