Object Description
This is a black and white photo that has been colorized. The subject is an older woman who is facing the camera. Her hair is pulled back. Her eyes have been colorized to be blue and her lips have been colorized pink. She is wearing a dark top with a v-neck with large lapels. There is a small tie that goes down the front of her top. Her torso fades out towards the bottom of the photo.

This photo is of Irene Jonas.
Irene Jonas (nee. Jonas as well) was from Corfu, Greece. She died on November 19, 1979 in Corfu at the age of 93 (born c. 1886). She was married to Nicholas Jonas who was also from Corfu, Greece. She lived in Bonham, TX from approximately 1913 until 1921 where she and her husband Nicholas owned three oil rigs and a candy store. She gave birth to three children: Vasileios (who died in Bonham), Panagiotis, William N., and Stella.
They returned to Greece in 1921 when Nicholas' mother begged for the family to return. Irene and Nicholas gave birth to four more children: Maria, Spiridoula, Katerina, and Arete, in Corfu in the village of Ano Korakiana.
Irene became widowed in the late 1930's when her husband Nicholas died of diabetes. As the only male child, Panagiotis (was called William N. Jonas due to a mix up with names on legal papers between him and his dead brother), had many opportunities that his sisters didn't have such as private lessons at home. Irene didn't discourage him to return to Texas along with his sister Stella (both had been born in the US) on January 30, 1937 in hopes that he could help support the family in Greece. It was here that he helped support his widowed sister raise her three children and then decided to enter the army as a medic.
