Object Description
A black-and-white poster. Most of the poster is a portrait of a man. He is wearing a black coat or robe and a white cravat. He is wearing a white wig. There is text in Greek in the lower right area of the portrait. Below the portrait, also in Greek, is text that says "National Poet" and "Dionysios Solomos".
Origin
Dionysios Solomos was born in 1798 in Zakynthos, in what is now part of Greece. He is considered to be the national poet of Greece. In 1823, he wrote the "Hymn to Liberty". The first two stanzas of the poem were later set to music and became the national anthem of Greece. He was a major part of the Heptanese School of Literature, based in the Ionian Islands. He died in 1857.
