Object Description
A black-and-white photographic print. A large group of men are standing in a room. A man with his face turned away from the camera is wearing a suit and side cap that says "Greek War Veterans". He is shaking hands with a man in a military uniform. A man next to him, closest to the camera, is also wearing and suit and "Greek War Veterans" side cap. He has glasses and a mustache and is also facing away from the camera. He is raising his hand as if preparing to be the next person to shake the hand of the man in uniform. There are three men behind the man in uniform, facing toward the camera. There is another man on the left of the picture looking at the men shaking hands.
In the upper left corner, there is an outline of a rectangle on the image, and the name "J. Alexander" is written in white inside the rectangle. The name "John Agreostathes" is written in pen on the back. Below this, the number "1069" is written above text that says "Photo by J. Alexander."
This picture was donated by Daisy Agres. It is unclear which of the men in the picture is John Agreostathes, but it may be the man at the forefront, wearing the light gray suit. Agreostathes (or Agriostathis) was born in 1879 and apparently served as an officer in the Greek army before immigrating to the United States. In the lead-up to the Balkan Wars, he organized and trained young Greek men in Chicago. In 1912, it is recorded that they were preparing to travel to Greece to take part in the conflict. A couple of the men are wearing "Greek War Veterans" caps, so this may be from some sort of military or veterans event, but it is unknown when or where the picture was taken. The photographer was apparently someone named J. Alexander.
