Object Description
This is a picture of John Catsulis at his restaurant, Chuck Wagon, in Chicago sometime between 1941 and 1947. Catsulis was born as John Katsoulakis in 1888 in Lastros Village, Sitia, Crete in Greece. He came to the United States as a young man and worked as a restaurant dishwasher. During World War I, he served as a baker and cook at Great Lakes Naval Station in Waukegan. He spent the rest of his life working at restaurants in Chicago and Waukegan. He sent money back to Greece to pay for the education of his nieces and nephews and paid for some of them to come to the United States. He never married or had children. He died in 1987 in Chicago at the age of 98. This photograph was donated by Catsulis's goddaughter, Helen Grenus. There is currently a Greek-American diner in Wilmette, Illinois called Chuck Wagon.
