Object Description
A photograph of a woman in a naval uniform. The photograph is of her upper torso and face. She is wearing a white blouse and a white naval uniform jacket with pins on the lapels. She has curly, dark hair and dark eyes. She is smiling and wearing lipstick. On her head, she is wearing a white female navy officer's hat. The hat has a black rim. There is a crest on the front of the hat with and eagle over a shield and two crossed anchors. Writing on the back of the photograph says "Navy Lt. Commander Adeline J. Geo-Karis 1942-1960 Navy Service".
Origin
This is a photograph of United States Navy Lieutenant Commander Adeline J. Geo-Karis. Geo-Karis was born in Tegeas, Greece in 1918 and moved to the United States with her parents when she was four years old. She attended Northwestern University and DePaul University College of Law. She served in the United States Naval Reserves from 1942 to 1960, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. She was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1973 to 1979 and a member of the Illinois Senate from 1979 to 2007.
