Object Description
The microfilms shows the image of a young woman with a baby in her lap. Identification tags hang around her neck. The child is looking up towards his mother who looks down and away from the camera but is not making eye contact with the baby either. Underneath the photo a label reads "Seated on a bare mattress in a Memphis refugee camp, this young mother nursed her baby while her eyes told the tragedy of the rising waters. Hundreds of men, women and..."
Origin
The Free Lance-Star from January 29th, 1937 ran this picture. Where the copy of the microfilm cuts off the label underneath the photo the newspaper (available online through Google News) continues on and is slightly different "Seated on a bare mattress in a Memphis refugee camp, this young mother nursed her baby while her eyes told the tragedy of the rising waters that swept away her possessions. They were among hundreds from the lowlands given shelter. The identification tags hung from the mother's neck."

In 1937 there was a record breaking flood in Memphis, Tennesse. The water level of the Mississippi River reached 48.7 feet.

Doctor John N Nicholson was a Greek immigrant doctor who practiced in the Chicago area for 50 years and was well known member of the Greek-American community. Nicholson created the movie Present Day Greece and Its Mediterranean Islands from 1946-1951. It is a three hour long documentary meant to educate Americans about Greece and the Greek-American identity in order to dispel negative stereotypes.
