Object Description
This is a B&W copy of a wedding photograph of Helen Miras to Christos Mercury in 1940 in Niata, Laconia, Greece. The image has a brown border which is most likely the evidence of a folio around the original.
Origin
This wedding photograph of Helen Miras to Christos Mercury in 1940 in Niata, Laconia, Greece, was donated by Mary Coulolias (daughter) on 11/11/04. The other items in this donation were part of Helen Mercury's dowry.

The donation included the following letter:

"Helen Mercury- . . . Helen Miras born in Apidia, Laconia, Greece. 1909. Married Christos Mercury in 1940 and lived in his home in Niata, Laconia, Greece a neighboring village. Her dowry included these pieces all were hand-woven by her. Much of her dowry was not used as the family fled from Greece to Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada because of the Greek Civil War. Christos left in 1947 and sent for Helen and his 3 daughters Catherine 5, Mary 4, and Patricia 2 flew from Athens to London to Iceland to Toronto. There she was met by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law and they all took the train to Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. That became their new home."
