Object Description
A black and white photograph of a family of nine native people from Papa New Guinea. They all wear wraps as bottoms and none wear shirts. The person in the middle is wearing a shawl, and the two people to her right are wearing fabric across his chest. The child, three people to the left, is wearing a hat. They are standing outside in a line. In the background is a body of water and a forested area.
Origin
These photos were donated by Captain George P. Sotos, who has given lectures at the National Hellenic Museum.

He was commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve in Chicago in 1941 and advanced to the rank of Lt. Commander by 1945. He was accepted into the Navy in 1947 and rose to his present rank of Captain in 1960. Captain Sotos' principla afloat duty has been with the Destroyer Force where he commanded Destroyer Escorts, a Detroyer, and an Escort Squadron. In the Amphibious Force he commanded the USS Colonial (LSD-18) and in the Service Force, his last afloat, commanded a fleet oiler, the USS Tolovana. Ashore he served as the Military Training Officer and then Executive Officer of the Recruit Trainging Commands at Greak Lakes, Il, and Bainbridge, MD.

Captatin Sotos is a native Chicagoan and a graduate of Hype Park High School and the UNiversity of Chicago. He is the son of Peter and Mary Sotos of Meligala and Kalamata, Greece, respectively, who emigrated to the U.S. in the early 1900's/ His parents and three brothers, Sam, a popular athlete amd pwner of Chicago Market Company; Gus, who was in active duty in the Army when WWII started, and suffered two combat wounds, and the youngest, Johnny are deceased. His sister, Virginia, lives in Wilmette, Il.

This photo is of a family that agrred to pose for a picture in maus, an island of the Bismark Archipelego. The USA had established a large harbor in Manus, Seeadler Harbor, that supported US Navy ships.
