Object Description
Informal shot of interior of a barber shop. John Melonides, standing, second from right.

According to obituary in Chicago Tribune: John Melonides, former barber in the area for over 60 years, died in 1989 at the age of 95.
Origin
Submitted and used in Greektown Chicago cookbook.

"After fleeing Turkey in 1914 to avoid conscription into the Turkish military, and following several years in South America, John Melonides, second from right, arrived in Chicago in the early 1920s. He had learned his trade in Turkey and found employment at a shop, pictured at left near Wilson and Broadway. A few years later he purchased his own barber shop. He retired from his profession in 1980 at the age of 86.
