Object Description
A large blanket with initials in the center.
Origin
Stavroula Poulakos was born in 1902 in Limenion, Laconia, Greece in the Peloponnese. Per the custom she was promised in marriage to the donor's grandfather, Ianni Versakos/Pavlakos. Family history says that Stavroula was descended from Petrobey Mavromichalis, a protagonist in the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire. Stavroula created the blanket when she was a teenager in the 1910s, and her initials are in the center. The blanket was passed down to the donor on her fifteenth birthday.

Stavroula and Ianni were married in 1918. Ianni had already been to the United States in the early 1900s, but returned to Greece to fight with the Greek Army during the First World War. He returned to Greece following the war and Stavroula followed, arriving in July 1920 with her mother and grandmother. The donor's father was born to Stavroula on July 24, 1920 on the hospital on Ellis Island.
