Object Description
Gold, brown, red, and white icon. The person depicted is holding a book, wearing a hat, and has one hand raised with the palm facing the viewer.
Origin
From the donor: "In May 1964, a friend and I visited Greece after spending time with her parents who lived in Beirut where her father was on the staff of the American University Hospital. From there we spent a day in Damascus, Syria and a few days in Istanbul before flying to Athens to explore as much as we could of Greece in two weeks. Athens with all its glorious sights occupied us for several days after which we took a guided bus tour across to the Peloponnese: Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia, Patras and back across to Delphi. It was in a small shop in the latter town that sold vintage maps and similar treasures that I found the icon of Saint Spyridon which I thought would be a fine memento of the trip. (I was not familiar with Saint Spyridon but subsequently learned that he was an approximate contemporary of Saint Chrysostom, both being bishops of the Greek Orthodox Church at the time of Constantine. Coincidentally, at the time I was a member of St. Chrysostom's Church in Chicago so that gave the icon added meaning.) Our trip ended with an Aegean cruise that took us to Crete. Rhodes, Kos, Patmos, Delos, and Mykonos where I disembarked and spent the long Orthodox Easter weekend there, a fitting end to a memorable vacation."
