Object Description
A squared piece made out of gold and red pattern fabric. The edges have red thread that go through the front and back and is closed with golden thread that square-off the central red crosses on the front and back side.
Origin
The object is owned by the Powers family and is connected to other items and photographs within the same collection. Filakto are Eastern Christian sacramentals that are pinned on the clothing of young children and babies, although adults are known to wear them. The Filakto which always bears the sign of the cross is meant to ward off Satan and protect the wearer from harm. The Filakto are made by monastics (nuns and monks), they are produced out of priest vestments, and contain holy material such as flower petals from Holy Friday or blessed palms.
