Object Description
American flag folded into a triangle. It has 50 sewn on white stars. The material that composes the fabric of the flag is somewhat see-through. On the end, there is a white band with two golden colored hoops on it, as well as a tag which reads "Best 100% Cotton Bunting, Made in the U.S.A, Valley Forge." The outside of the flag is much more faded than the inside, indicating that it has been folded for a long time.
Origin
Found in collection. The flag is folded in the manner that is followed upon the lowering of the flag everyday and also at funerals for servicemen and women and veterans. The flag is folded in a triangle as to imitate the appearance of the cocked hats worn by American servicement during the Revolutionary War. When the flag is completely folded only the canton of blue with the stars is visible. The blue symbolizes honor. The stars symbolize the 50 states the service men and women served. The folding of the stripes into the blue and stars also symoblizes the light of day vanishing into the dark of night. Folded flags are presented to the family of deceased service personnel and veterans as a sign of thier honorable service.
