Object Description
Black sleeveless overcoat with red trim around the outside edge and armholes. There are pockets located on either side, also trimmed in red. The design on the front is on the upper part of the vest, and consists of red chords. It flares out at the waist. It would be approximately knee length on a woman. The front of the overcoat is open. The stitching on the inside is brown. Thebes and Pelopennese style.
Origin
Owned by Joan Sherman, who bought it in an Athenian Market in 1970-1971. It is a part of the traditional Greek costume. It is known as a segouni, and was worn over the traditional dress. This type of dress was worn in Epirus, whose folk costume images typically depict the women wearing black and red sleeveless overcoats such as these. Thebes and Pelopennese style.
