Judge Karnezis began his legal career in 1970 as an assistant state's attorney in Cook County. In 1974, he began working as a private practice lawyer. He was appointed a Cook County associate judge in June of 1982 and was promoted to circuit judge in 1989. He was retained to this position by voters in 1990. He was involved in the Criminal Division of this court for sixteen years. He also served on the Law Jury Division and as the presiding judge of the Fourth Municipal District before he was assigned to the appellate court in March of 2002.
