Object Description
The fez is a maroon felt hat with AHEPA in yellow on the front over the symbol of a bird over a blue cross with green leaves in a circle around it. There are two swords crossing behind the cross and yellow lines coming out of the cross. On the inside along the bottom edge is a brown hard fabric and a tag stiched in it. The tag reads " Gemsco 692 Broadway, New York City Registered. Manufacturers of Fezzes, Badges, Banners, Flags, Aprons, Initiation, Stunts, Collars, Lodge Jewelry. Supplies for Lodges-Schools-Churches-Organizations". There is a long light blue and white tassel coming from the top of the hat.
The fez also has a red bag which holds it. The bag has a gold rope to sinch the top of the bag. Stamped on the bottom in yellow ink reads "7 1/2" (the size of the hat).
Origin
AHEPA Fez circa 1920s. Belonged to Paul J. Tailor of Mason City, Iowa.
Paul was born in Visa (Vize?) Turkey and emigrated to the United States before World War I. He served in the United States and after he was discharged, he emigrated to Mason City, Iowa. In Mason City, Iowa, he was in the restaurant business.
Paul died in 1962.
