Object Description
A set of three slides with white plastic frames. Each slide has an image of one of Athens' town squares. The slides, along with a tag, are encased in a plastic wrapping, which is stapled to the tag. The tag identifies the subject of the slides as "Athens by Night" in "Greece."This set of slides is "set one," and the manufacturer is "Pana-vue." These particular slides are "Superdia Slides," which "fit all 2" x 2" slide viewers and projectors. The first slide is identified as being an image of "Constitution Square," the second is "Omonia Square," and the third is "Klafthmonos Square." The words "Made in Belgium" are printed on the back of each frame.
Origin
It is unclear when exactly these slides were made, although it may have been sometime in the 1960s. They were manufactured in Belgium. The fact that they are images of Greek landmarks suggests that they may have been purchased in Greece.
Each slide is a picture of an Athenian town square at night. Constitution Square (Syntagma Square in Greek) is the most important square in modern Athens. It is located in front of the Old Royal Palace, which has housed the Greek Parliament since 1934. It is named after the 1844 Constitution, the first constitution of the Kingdom of Greece.
Omonia Square (Concord Square in English) is in the center of the City of Athens. It is one of the City's oldest square. Its name comes from the fact that it was the location where opposing factions made peace following the deposition of King Otto in 1862.
Klafthmonos Square (Lamentation Square in English) is located off the main part of Stadiou Street, which is the major street linking Constitution Square and Omonia Square. In the 19th century, civil servants would gather here to learn the results of the election. If a party other than the one that had hired them was elected, they would lament the fact that they were about to lose their jobs, as the new party would want to hire their own people.
