Object Description
A set of three slides with white plastic frames. Each slide has an image of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The slides, along with a tag, are encased in a plastic wrapping, which is stapled to the tag. The tag identifies the subject of the slides as "The Acropolis" in "Athens - Greece". This set of slides is "set three" and the manufacturer is "Pana-vue". These particular slides are "Superdia Slides", which "fit all 2" x 2" slide viewers and projectors. The first slide is identified as being an image of "the Parthenon", the second is "the Propylaea", and the third is "Parthenon - Detail -". The words "Made in Belgium" are printed on the back of each frame.
Origin
It is unclear when exactly these slides were made, although it may have been sometime in the 1960s. They were manufactured in Belgium. The fact that they are images of Greek landmarks suggests that they may have been purchased in Greece.
All three slides are images of the Acropolis, a well-known and important landmark in Athens. Most of the important structures that make up the Ancient Greek citadel were built during the 5th century BCE, under the direction of the renowned Greek statesman, Pericles. The buildings include the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. The Propylaea is an enormous stone gateway that serves as the entrance to the Acropolis.
