Object Description
A piece of street art. The artwork is made using a combination of painting, drawing, and paper cutting. The focal point is the image of a face that takes up most of the space. The image is made with paint and marker and shows two dark, scrunched up eyes, a button nose, and a wide, toothy smile. This image has been cut out and placed on a colorful background. The background is made from a combination of cut out paper, paint, and ink. Pieces of the face image have been cut out or torn away to reveal more of the background. Part of the mouth has been torn away to reveal painted stripes of various colors with lines drawn across them in black marker. There is a yellow triangle under the right eye and a blue, upward-pointing arrow under the left eye. There is writing in a couple of spots, but it is largely illegible. The border of the background is painted blue, with various other colors painted on top if it. The letters "STMTS" are written in blue in the lower left.
Origin
This artwork was donated by the Greek street artist STMTS. The artist prefers to remain anonymous. The work was part of an exhibit on Greet graffiti and street art. Street art has become prolific in Greece, especially in Athens, since the beginning of the Greek debt crisis in the late 2000s. Street art is a way for people to express themselves while remaining largely anonymous, and has emerged as a way for Greek artists to express their feelings and concerns about the economy and its effect on the Greek population.
