Object Description
A pin-back button. The button has a white background and light blue boarder. On the left side of the button is an American flag hanging vertically and on the right side is a light blue Greek flag hanging vertically. Between the flags is a blue, red, and white image of an Evzone. Below the Evzone is the word "Evzone". Above the Evzone is the word "Victory" and, below that, "Ni-ke" is written in Greek. Along the buttom of the button is the following: "Acropolis Novelty Co. - Made in U.S.A." The back is made of metal and has a non-fastening pin.
Origin
This button was donated by Jenny Boondas. It was part of a collection belonging to her brother-in-law, Constantine Brown, who died in 2014. This button is from World War II. It was likely made for the Greek American community to support both the Greek and American efforts in the war. "Nike" is the Greek word for victory. The button either celebrates an Allied victory in the war or simply promotes the idea of future victory. Evzones was the name of several historical Greek military units and is now used to refer to members of the Greek Presidential Guard.
