Object Description
This is a headscarf made out of a light, white fabric. For most of the scarf, the fabric is thin and transparent. However, it is woven thicker in places to form striping. Most of the scarf has vertical stripes, but the stripes on the ends are horizontal. The short edges of the scarf have pieces of jagged-edged lace fabric sewn onto them. The fabric has yellowed with age. There is some fraying in the corners and along some parts of the edges. There are some brown spots and streaks on the scarf and the fabric has worn through in some places.
Origin
This scarf was donated by Helen Adinolfi as part of a traditional Greek costume. The costume was worn by Adinolfi's mother, Fotini, at her wedding to Stylianos Dedes in January 1929 in Epirus, Greece. Traditional costumes like this are based on clothing historically worn in Greece. The costumes vary depending on the region of origin. They are generally worn for special occasions and celebrations. This scarf is worn over the head, as the final piece of the costume.
Photos of Helen Adinolfi wearing the costume are included in the donor file.
