Object Description
This is a detachable collar or neck piece made out of a light, white fabric. The collar is pleated and stitched with patterns of flowers and criss-cross designs. There are metal sequins sewn along the top edge of the collar and more sequins along the width of the fabric on the ends of the collar. The side and bottom edges of the collar are thin wire chains made of some kind of metal, likely brass. There are more sequins hanging from the edges, as well as larger ornaments made out of wire, sequins, and thread around some sort of base. The thread around the edges, as well as some of the thread on the inside, is yellow. The rest of thread is the same color as the color. The inside/back of the collar has a metal hook at the top of one end, and a metal eye at the other end. These hook together to fasten the collar. The fabric has yellowed with age. There are some loose threads and wires, and some discoloration around the top. Some of the metal parts are loose.
Origin
This collar was donated by Helen Adinolfi as part of a traditional Greek costume. The costume was worn by Adinolfi's mother, Fotini, at her wedding to Stylianos Dedes in January 1929 in Epirus, Greece. Traditional costumes like this are based on clothing historically worn in Greece. The costumes vary depending on the region of origin. They are generally worn for special occasions and celebrations. This collar is worn around the neck, two vests that make up the upper part of the costume.
Photos of Helen Adinolfi wearing the costume are included in the donor file.
