Object Description
Male Evzone doll. He is wearing the traditional Farion, however what is untraditional is the color; instead of being red it is in a khaki like color, but it does still have the black tassel. He is also wearing a Ypodetes, a white long sleeve, collard shirt with very wide sleeves. The color has slightly darker so it is now an off white/cream color. Over the Ypodetes is the Fermeli, waistcoat, that is in a tan/brown color. Comes down to the waist and does not have a full sleeve, but more so a flap that lays on the top of the arms. It is embroidered with a wavy peach color strips: two that lay on the front on the vest about half an inch apart, another bordering the bottom of the coat and another bordering the sleeves. In between the two strips on the front of the coat are two sequins that are set vertically from another. There is also a waist band at is mostly covered by the coat, but is shown through the center opening of the coat. It is tan in color, but when moving the coat over slightly you can see that the band use to have a more pink tone to it. There are three more sequins on the top: one set in between the collar of the shirt and the other two about half an inch down on the chest and vertical from one another. He is also wearing the Foustanella, a knit skirt with 400 folds representing the 400 years of Ottoman occupation. At one point the doll probably had this in a white color, but like the top the color has faded a bit and is now in an off white/cream color. About mid shin, on each leg, there is a black string at goes around the whole leg and on the front comes down to an upside down triangle with a tassel on the outside. This is possibly used to distinguish a look of a sock. His foot wear is the Tsarouchia, which is shown by dying the fabric red. Also there is a pompom on the tip of the toe which is colored white and blue.
His head is made of plastic, face painted in a peach tone, with the hair being painted a slightly darker shade; little indentations have been etched in to define the hair area. His eyebrows are a think, curved brown line. Eyes are painted blue and lips red. Nostrils are also defined with two little red dots.
Origin
Donated by Betty Petrakis Raethz, but belonged to and made by Bertha Roudos.
The Evzones, or Evzoni is the name of several historical elite light infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army. Today, it refers to the members of the Presidential Guard, an elite ceremonial unit that guards the Greek Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Presidential Mansion and the gate of Evzones camp in Athens. The Evzones are also known, colloquially, as Tsoliades.
Though the Presidential Guard is a predominantly ceremonial unit, all Evzones are volunteers drawn from the Hellenic Army's Infantry, Artillery and Armoured Corps. Prospective Evzones are usually identified at the Army Recruit Training Centres during Basic Training; there is a minimum height requirement of 1.86 m (6' 1.2") to join.
The unit is famous around the world for its unique traditional uniform, which has evolved from the clothes worn by the klephts[1] who fought the Ottoman occupation of Greece. The most visible item of this uniform is the fustanella, a kilt-like garment. Their proven valour and peculiar dress turned them into a popular image for the Greek soldier, especially among foreigners.
