Origin
A kandili is an oil lamp that hangs in front of icons in orthodox churches, or in the homes of orthodox Christians in front of iconostasis.

The light is lit everyday and symbolizes the illuminating hope of Christ as well as sacrifice. The oil itself symbolizes the neverending mercy of God. Though many kandilis are fully brass, some also have large glass bulbs and may come in a variety of colors.
