Object Description
The handmade cloth backdrop is white with several small faint scattered stains. There is an embroidered design at the bottom of the cloth. In gold and brown thread a word is spelled out in Greek. There are two purple embroidered birds, one below the word on the left and another above the word on the right. They are each holding an "X" which is surrounded by a circle in their mouths, also stitched in purple. Woven through the word are stitched red and pink flowers on green vines with green leaves. The embroidery can be seen on the reverse side of the cloth. The bottom edge of the cloth has a multicolored trim. Blue, red, yellow, and green thread is stitched together to create a small crochet pattern. The top edge of the cloth also has a threaded trim in the same blue, red, yellow, and green colors that are at the bottom of the cloth. However this trim is taut to the cloth.
Origin
The textile is handmade from Lesbos. It is suggested to have been used as a hand towel. The crochet at the bottom of the cloth is a distinct aspect of Greek culture, especially in regards to women's actvitiies.
