Object Description
This textile piece is handmade. The cloth is different shades of red over an off white color. The pattern is a large plaid design. There are sporadic large lines and small lines overlapping one another. The long side edges of the cloth are slightly rough and frayed. The top and bottom edges are smooth with no trace of fraying. In the center off white square there is an embroidered letter "G" in red. It appears cross stitched and can be seen on the reverse side of the cloth. Also in this center square is what looks like a repaired tear in the fabric. It has been stitiched with the same color thread as the cloth.
Origin
The letter "G" embroidered in the center of the cloth is for the Donor's grandfather George. It is handmade from Lesbos Cross stitching and knitting are a distinct aspect of Greek culture and activities, particularly for women. A cloth like this is suggested to have been used as a hand towel.
