Object Description
Large, Rectangular, wood printing block of a highly detailed map of the Prefecture of Messina. there is a small box in the upper left hand corner that gives the map's title/subject and the scale (1:500,000) in Greek. Below this box is another that contains the "legend" for for differentiating the different lines on the map. The kew has "county boundaries, rail lines, Public ...., Walking ...., Rivers, Archaeological sites, and lighthouses." The map itself is an intricately drawn web of these lines and place names (all in greek). The picture is cropped closely so that the land takes up most of the space with only a small border of water around it.
Origin
Donated by John Damianos. The printing block was used in a linotype printing machine. Linotype presses allowed for the casting of entire lines to be printed at a time. Linotype printing was eventually succeeded by lithograph printing and computer typesetting during the 1960's and 1970's. This printing block was used by the Chicago-based, Greek Art Printing Company that was owned and operated by Aristotle Damianos. The Greek Art Printing Company was responsible for the printing of a wide range of materials, including wedding invitations, invoices, flyers, programs, letterhead, etc., for Greek businesses, organizations, institutions, and individuals in the Chicago area, and elsewhere.

Messina is the southwest area of the Peloponnese in Southern Greece.
