Object Description
Cast lead printing block. The printing image is of a circular seal. The seal consists of two concentric circles, one inside the other. The outer circle forms the outline of the seal. Between the two circles is a ring of text that reads: Piana Association of America. Inc, Chicago. At the center of the seal is the image of a church atop a hill and surrounded by buildings. Below the image is the date "1969." The date is set in a hole that exists in the leab block, possibly so as to be interchangeable.
Origin
Donated by John Damianos. The printing block was used in a linotype printing machine. Linotype presses allowed for the casting of entire lines to be printed at a time. Linotype printing was eventually succeeded by lithograph printing and computer typesetting during the 1960's and 1970's. This printing block was used by the Chicago-based, Greek Art Printing Company that was owned and operated by Aristotle Damianos. This print image was used for the printing of letterhead for the Piana Association of America, Inc. The Piana Association was an organization comprised of Greek-American immigrants from the Greek village of Piana or the surrounding region of Falanthos. Falanthos is a sub-region of Arcadia located northeast of Tripolis in the Mainalo Mountains. Piana served as the administration hub of the Greek forces serving under the Greek Revolutionary hero, Theodoras Kolokotronis, during the War of Greek Independence. The church shown at the center of the seal is of St. George Greek Orthodox Chruch in Piana.
